Laser Hair Removal Treatments by Specialists

Shaving, tweezing and waxing can be such a constant chore and often painful. If you’re tired of the tedium of these hair removal techniques but still want smooth, silky skin, then laser hair removal is right for you. Laser hair removal has gained much popularity over the past few years with both men and women because of its effective results that are both safe and gentle. And with no patient recovery time needed, treatments can easily fit in a busy lifestyle.

At Laser Esthetica, we have a variety of state-of-the-art lasers to meet different hair removal needs. Dr. Prasad and her team are laser hair removal specialists, performing treatments since the opening of Laser Esthetica in 2001. They understand the differences in skin and hair texture as well as condition to determine what medical equipment will achieve the best results.

Dr. Prasad has performed many laser hair removal treatments on several parts of my fair skinned body over the years and the results have been excellent*

  • How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During treatments, the lasers produce a bright beam of light that gets absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in your hair. This damages the hair shaft and follicle without harming the surrounding tissue. Instead of the laser seeing hair, it merely sees pigment, unfortunately making laser hair removal ineffective on blonde or white hair.

  • Who Is a Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?

Everyone is a candidate for Laser Hair Removal at Laser Esthetica. Because the way the lasers operate, the ideal candidate is a patient with light skin and coarse, dark hair. However, due to recent developments in technology, we can still achieve great results in patients with darker skin. For these patients, we use the most advanced, specialized lasers. At Laser Esthetica, we make sure to carry an array of different, high-quality lasers to ensure that all our patients of all skin types are as comfortable as possible.

All areas of the body can be treated with Laser Hair Removal, making it popular amongst both men and women. Due to current technology, however, it is not effective to treat blonde or white hair as the lasers do not recognize the lack of pigment.

  • What Are The Advantages of Laser Hair Removal Compared To Other Hair Removal Methods?

Traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, tweezing, waxing and depilatories are all temporary, whereas laser hair removal offers a permanent method to remove unwanted hair. Laser hair removal alleviates the potential for allergic reactions, burns, ingrown hairs, scarring, and a sometimes painful experience that waxing could allow. Depilatories can cause skin irritation and burns and require weekly routine use. Plucking and tweezing are highly impractical for large areas, can be painful and could lead to pigmentation problems and scarring, especially in patients with darker skin. Electrolysis can take years of treatments in sizable areas because it only treats one hair follicle at a time.

  • How Many Treatments Will I Need?

How many treatments a patient needs depends on the hair density, hair color and hormonal factors. The number of treatments required varies from four to eight, spaced four to six weeks apart for the face, and spaced six to eight weeks apart for the torso and legs. Each treatment lasts between fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the size of the area. Each treatment cumulatively damages the hair follicle, so the thickness of the regrowing hair progressively reduces. Multiple treatments are necessary as hair grows in stages, and the most responsive stage is in the active growth stage.

  • Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

The FDA has cleared these lasers for permanent reduction of unwanted hair, and results are exceptional. Four to six treatments will give the patient an approximate 90% reduction for non-hormonal areas of the body. Although no one can guarantee complete and permanent removal of unwanted hair, we assure you that laser hair removal is the most advanced and most effective hair removal procedure today, and patients are content with the results.

  • Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Generally, Laser Hair Removal is tolerated very well. Patients will describe the sensation to be similar to the snap of a warm rubber band. We believe in a “no pain” philosophy, and we offer highly effective anesthetic creams that can be used prior to treatment to numb the skin. We also use the Zimmer Chiller (a cold air device) to even further the comfort of the patient.

  • What Are The Possible Side Effects?

Permanent complications from laser hair removal are rare. Temporary skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) can occur, especially for patients with darker or tanned skin. This is uncommon at Laser Esthetica because we use specialized lasers for darker skin. Hypopigmentation (lightening of skin color) is a rare complication of laser hair removal and would be more common if specialized lasers were not used. The risk of scarring with laser hair removal is quite rare.

  • What Areas Of the Body Can Be Treated?

All areas of the body are eligible for treatment, including the face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, back and ears are treatable. Eyebrows should not be shaped with the laser but the area between the brows can be treated.

  • How Will I Look And Care For The Treated Area?

Laser hair removal requires no downtime, however the treated area may appear minimally red immediately after the procedure. This reaction typically subsides within minutes or hours after treatment, during which time it is best to avoid exposing the treated area to the sun. Ice compresses can help resolve the redness, if necessary. Applying any antibacterial cream is not necessary.

What Can Be Done For Patients With Light Blonde, Silver or Grey Hair? Does Laser Hair Removal Treat Ingrown Hairs?

Unfortunately, laser hair removal is not effective for individuals with light blonde, grey or silver hair because of the current technology. Laser hair removal is very effective for problematic ingrown hairs.

  • Does Hair Need To Be Long To Perform Laser Hair Removal?

No, it is actually preferable for hair to be short. No more than 1-2mm (1-2 days growth) at the time of the treatment. Hair can be trimmed or shaved prior to the treatment, but waxing or plucking should be avoided for one to two weeks beforehand to enhance effectiveness. It is essential that back hair be shaved one to two days before the procedure.

  • Are There Different Types of Systems Used For Laser Hair Removal?

There are several types of structures used for laser hair removal including the Diode and ND/YAG lasers, as well as the intense pulsed light systems. Many companies make lasers, and they vary in terms of cooling methods, treatment spot sizes, comfort and treatments durations. Upon your consultation, our staff will discuss with you the specifics of the laser system recommended for your personalized treatment.

  • What Areas Do Men Regularly Treat?

Laser hair removal is popular with many men. The back and shoulders are the most commonly treated areas, and some men also treat the chest, abdomen, ears and neck. Some men choose to just thin the hair out, rather than removing all of it. Our wide array of hair removal lasers work well for a man’s back, and it is not uncommon for us to use several different lasers during a man’s treatment program. It is important for the patient to have their back shaved either the day before or the morning of the treatment.

  • What Are The Medical Issues That May Cause Excessive Hair Growth?

It is possible to have excessive hair growth due to abnormal male type hormone levels (androgens). Other symptoms, such as abnormal periods or acne, may be present, while sometimes they are not. During your consultation, Dr. Prasad and her staff will discuss with you the details of the abnormal conditions that exist and outline a plan for diagnosis and treatment.

  • Why Choose Laser Esthetica For Laser Hair Removal?

Aesthetic and laser medicine is the sole focus at Laser Esthetica. We begin the process of laser hair removal with a consultation, and encourage patients to ask questions. We want your experience at Laser Esthetica to be as enjoyable as the outcome of the treatment. Since we have several state-of-the-art hair removal systems, we can create a program specific to your needs, as opposed to most facilities that rely on only one system to treat all patients.
