What is nail fungus?
Nail fungal infections, clinically known as onychomycosis, are typically caused by fungus, yeasts and molds. In most cases this does not create long term illness or other serious problems. However, cosmetically the toenail or fingernail continues to become unsightly, and damaged nails that have been left untreated could lead to an infection or even loss of the toenail.
What are the symptoms of nail fungus?
Usually the initial symptoms of an infection are barely, if at all, noticeable, starting out as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the toenail or fingernail. Gradually, the nail fungus spreads deeper and starts to cause increased discoloration and thickening. This thickening may then lead to crumbling edges.
Can nail fungus be spread from person to person?
Yes, nail fungus is ubiquitous. Not only does it spread from one toe to another, it also spreads from person to person and frequently occurs in family households. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to seek treatment to prevent the spread of the fungus to others.
What are some ways to treat nail fungal infection?
There are a variety of over-the-counter nail polishes (example – Penlac polish), powders, creams and ointments to try and kill the fungal infection, but the success rates of curing the problem are about 8%. It is possible to take oral medication such as Lamisil or Sporonox for a three month period which is effective in 50% of patients, but can affect the liver and therefore should be restricted to young and healthy patients. The new laser technology is a great way to treat nail fungal infection without any systemic side effects and with better success rates then the topical products.
How does the laser treatment work?
The laser is a light based device that heats up the nail and nail bed enough to destroy the fungus growing under the nail. We use the Cutera Genesis Plus laser which is an FDA approved device that helps to get rid of the toe nail fungus.
How safe is the laser treatment procedure?
The procedure is completely safe, and there are no known adverse side effects. During the procedure itself, heat is felt in the nail. Dr. Prasad and our staff will make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. It is best to remove excess thickness of the nail by having your manicurist thin down the nail with the nail drill. This allows more of the laser energy to penetrate the nail.
What is the treatment’s success rate?
In clinical studies conducted to-date, the laser treatment demonstrated significant nail appearance improvement with one treatment, similar to or better than the results found when taking more harmful oral medications. Generally, there is a 60% success rate with one treatment, which increases to a 70% success rate with a second treatment performed 6 weeks after the first.
When will I see results?
On average, a toenail will replace itself every 6-9 months. Patients start to notice healthy new growth within 3 months of the treatment. Usually it takes the entire 6-9 month period before the full cosmetic benefit is seen.
